When it comes to personal growth, the real magic happens through knowing yourself, and self-awareness. It’s a skill I lean on in my own life and something I encourage others to explore in their journey of self-improvement. Since September is Self-Improvement Month, it's the perfect time to reflect and take small, meaningful steps toward becoming more self-aware.
For me, self-awareness isn’t just about knowing your strengths and weaknesses. It’s about really understanding how you move through the world, how your emotions show up, and what influences your decisions, big or small. It’s a way of slowing down and paying attention—noticing the subtle patterns that influence your day-to-day life.
If you’re ready to dive in, I want to share some of the mindful practices I use, and that I offer to others in my work, to help you cultivate self-awareness. And remember, this is a journey. You don’t have to rush—just start with one practice and give yourself the space to grow.
Daily Reflection: A Powerful Tool for Self-Awareness
One of the practices that has been most impactful for me is daily reflection. At the end of each day, I take a few moments to reflect on what happened—not with judgment, but with curiosity.
You can try this by asking yourself:
What made me feel most alive today?
Where did I feel resistance or frustration?
How did I handle moments of stress?
Start by focusing on just one of these questions each day. There’s no rush. Over time, you’ll start noticing patterns in your responses that give you insight into your emotional triggers and how you react to different situations. This awareness is where real change begins.
Breath Awareness: Ground Yourself in the Moment
When life feels overwhelming or your mind is racing, breath awareness is a simple yet powerful way to center yourself. This practice helps you reconnect with the present moment, bringing in a sense of calm and clarity. Here’s how to do it:
Inhale deeply for 4 seconds, feeling the air filling your lungs.
Hold that breath for 4 seconds, letting the calm settle into your body.
Exhale slowly for 6 seconds, imagining yourself letting go of any tension or stress.
I encourage you to visualize your breath as a source of calm, bringing in peace with each inhale and releasing whatever doesn’t serve you with each exhale. This is a practice you can use anywhere—when you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or simply need a moment to re-center.
Body Scan: Tuning into Your Body Throughout the Day

Self-awareness doesn’t just live in your mind—it’s also about becoming more aware of how your body reacts to emotions, thoughts, and stressors. One way I build self-awareness is through a body scan. What’s great about this practice is that you can integrate it into your daily routine, whether you’re brushing your teeth, washing dishes, or sitting at work.
Here’s how it works: As you go through these everyday tasks, check in with yourself. Mentally scan your body from head to toe, noticing where you’re holding tension.
Are your shoulders tight?
Is there a heaviness in your chest or tightness in your jaw?
What emotions might be connected to that tension?
You don’t need to set aside special time for this. Start paying attention to your body while doing things like driving, walking, or even while in a conversation. It’s a subtle way to build self-awareness and understand how your emotions manifest physically.
A Call to Action: Where Will You Begin?
Self-awareness isn’t about perfection or arriving at a destination—it’s about noticing, observing, and learning. Each of these mindful practices is a stepping stone toward a greater understanding of yourself. And with that understanding comes the power to make intentional, meaningful changes in your life.
As you begin this journey, I encourage you to start small. Focus on answering just one reflection question at a time, or take a moment during your day to breathe deeply or scan your body. The goal is not to rush but to build awareness gradually.
Are you ready to take that first step? I believe in your ability to grow and transform, and I’m here to guide you along the way. Your journey toward a more self-aware, fulfilled version of yourself starts now.
Oodles,
Heather
